New Fellowship Subscription Rates for 2010

The Society held its 2009 AGM on 3 June at Burlington House, when the new Fellowship subscription rates for 2010 were agreed.  We are pleased to announce that the 2010 annual subscription rates for Fellows will remain unchanged, the fees for Candidate Fellows will be reduced, and the Society will be introducing a new category of membership called Junior Candidate Fellow.

From this September, if you are registered for a first degree in geology, you may join the Society as a Candidate Fellow for just £15 for one year, or £40 if you choose to pay up-front for the duration of your full-time undergraduate course.  Our new membership category of Junior Candidate Fellow is available to anyone under 18 years of age in full-time secondary education, at an annual rate of just £10.

So, if you are at school and have an interest in geology, or an undergraduate studying geology, why not join the Society?   You can find out more about the benefits of membership and joining the Society by visiting our website at www.geolsoc.org.uk/join, or by contacting our Fellowship Department for further information.

The data and models in this volume present a comprehensive picture of the Late Palaeozoic to Cenozoic evolution of the South Caspian to Central Iran region. The UK will import 90% of its gas by 2020 and new underground storage facilities are needed. Sponsor A Manuscript!

The Library is appealing for donations to help preserve one of the Society’s most important archive manuscript books.  This manuscript book includes numerous letters, tracts and memoirs from eminent early thinkers in geology, including the Comte de Bournon’s ‘Memoire sur la Societe Geologique de Londre’, an item that played a very significant role in the founding of the Society. The sum needed to restore this priceless manuscript is £2500 and we hope that many Fellows, Corporate Affiliates or associates of the Society will help the Library in this appeal.

We are only £85 away from the total needed to conserve the 1777 edition of Bernard Palissy’s 'Oeuvres’.  Please contact Michael McKimm if you would like to make a donation or further information.

Founders' Day Lecture and Dinner 2009 - Celebrating Charles Darwin and the World of Geology

Date: 12 November 2009
Venue: The Geological Society (Burlington House) and Le Meridien, Piccadilly

2009 is the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s Wollaston Medal – the highest honour conferred by the Geological Society.  Darwin won the medal for pioneering work on the structural uplift of the Andes and his theory of the origin of coral reefs.  In his most celebrated work, Darwin used a geological approach to solve that 'mystery of mysteries', the origin of new species.  A pre-dinner talk by Professor Jim Secord, Director of the Darwin Correspondence Project, will explore a too-often overlooked aspect of Charles Darwin’s science, followed by a reception and dinner at the Le Meridien hotel.

July Issue of EARTH Magazine: Geology for a Stable Afghanistan

The July issue of EARTH Magazine delves into the issue of the economic development potential of Afghanistan, through its untapped rich mineral and energy resources.

Read about the work the U.S. Geological Survey is conducting with the Afghanistan Geological Survey and the Ministry of Energy and Water to map and develop Afghanistan’s vast and mostly untouched deposits of copper, iron, natural gas, oil, and gemstones.  Careful development of these resources could not only help to pay for the rebuilding of the country, but provide a prosperous future for its citizens.
