Excursions:

Two single-day Field trips are proposed.

The first excursion will include a visit to interesting geological sites in the Belgrade area.

Few points of observation are proposed.

1. Miocene reef at Kalemegdan. Section of Miocene sediments at the central part of City Park. It represents part of the historical complex of the Kalemegdan fortress and is located within remnants of the Roman fortress from the second century, and the Turkish and Austrian fortress of medieval age. The participants will also visit the gunpowder storage, which is part of the fortress historical complex, where they will be informed with specific geotechnical work performed in order to protect this structure.

2. New Sava bridge building site. Short stay is planned, with the presentation of the geological section at the substrate.

3. Mašin Majdan, geological site in Topčider Park. On the exposure can be observed a typical Orgonian deposits of  lower Cretaceous age, covered by shallow water sediments of the Upper Cretaceous age.

4. Exposures of Mesozoic rocks in Topčider River valley. It is intended to visit several sites with different formations of  Jurassic and Cretaceous age.

5. Tunnel "Straževica". The site where the works on the construction of a new tunnel are performed. Tunnel will be part of the Belgrade detour highway. At the site can be seen geology of the locality as well as some methods of geological research.

Here you can download Okolina Beograda.kml file with excursions localities wich can be opened and observed in Google Maps.

Trip will be held during the congress. Detailed program will be coordinated with the schedule of Congress. Participation in this excursion will be free of charge.

The Second excursion includes a travel around of the open pit coal mine in Kostolac with a visit to paleontological and archaeological sites.

1. Visiting the active open pit coal mine "Drmno" in which the lignite coal is exploited. It is main source for the "Kostolac" A and B power plants with total power of 1 000 MW.

2. Sightseeing of the mine from observation point. It is possible to take a look at the whole lithological section of the upper Pontian series. Series itself was discovered in the depths of approx. 80 m and width of more than 3km. It is easy to observe the surface soil cover below which extends a series of gravels and sand as well as productive coal layer..

3. Archaeological locality "Viminacium," where are the remains of one of the major cities of the Roman Empire from the period between I to VI century AC.

 Viminacium consists of:

• Military Camp,

• Urban core,

• port,

• autochthonous settlements,

• residential buildings,

• Art studios, workshops, mints, etc..,

Part of the settlement area of approximately 2 km2 was unveiled by geophysical exploration. It is primarily the city cemetery, Roman baths – bathrooms, and a gateway of the military camp. Due to Mining works aqueduct was unveiled. Viminacium aqueduct was built for transport of drinking water from the springs to the town in the length of 10 km.

During the tour of archaeological sites professional guides and curators will be provided, with detailed explanations on the site and life style in this Roman city. At the http://www.viminacium.org.rs/ you can see more about Viminacum site

4. Visiting the Mammoth skeleton, that was discovered at the coal mine. The reconstruction of the skeleton is visible at the Viminacium site. About six meters long and more than three meters high, is over a million years old and belong to one of the oldest Mammoth specimens discovered in Europe. Mammoth is called "Vika" and more about it you can find on many sites, eg. http://staklenozvono.rs/?p=909.
